Torpedo Zero Hunger ’21 Initiative: Uplift Kitchen

A new season brings a new focus for our philanthropic endeavours. We are happy to announce our charitable partnership with Uplift Kitchen in Toronto, ON. As always, it's for the people, by the people.

Torpedo Zero Hunger ’21 is our Spring charitable initiative in support of Issue 02, where we explore the theme of hunger in our communities through the lens of racism, food insecurity, and the everyday people tapping into their networks to make vulnerable communities safer and more nourished.

We have realized that one of the most effective ways to enact change is just to do the damn thing. There is nothing more to it than pushing up our sleeves and diving in. In times like these, we cannot afford to wait for government funding, policy changes, publicity or PR – these things are important, but what we do individually for the community adds up, and quickly.

In light of the simple idea to just do something, we have created a limited-edition long sleeve t-shirt with the assistance of the very talented Baltimore-based designer/illustrator, Scott Sugiuchi, who brought our retro ideas to life. He has brilliantly created an 80’s-inspired icon reminiscent of Saturday morning cartoons, bowls of cereal, and the nostalgia of all things wholesome and good. We have printed the design on Airlume-combed and ring-spun cotton, made in a Los Angeles-based factory that supports fair, sustainable labour practices and conscious creation and consumption.

All proceeds from the purchase of this shirt will go toward Uplift Kitchen, a food security initiative created to serve Black, Indigenous, and other racialized communities in Toronto and surrounding areas. Their primary mission during this time of global unrest is to serve communities who have been affected by the pandemic and who are also suffering at the hands of systemic and overt racism.

The strongest force we have is each other. Let’s fight the good fight so everyone can have access to a warm meal, the satisfaction of a full belly, and the comfort of knowing that we are all looking out for each other.
